That would be today, November 25. On this day in 1960 the Mirabal sisters were assassinated in the Dominican Republic. They had become very public political activists fighting against the dictator of Rafael Trujillo. In 1999 the UN designated today as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It also kick-starts the beginning of 16 days of activism against gender violence, ending on December 10, Human Rights Day.
